Mental Health

There is a strong connection between Physical Well Being and Mental Health. Physiotherapists are members of a mental health team who can provide a range of treatments that improve physical well being. These can include therapy to:

  • Reduce physical pain
  • Improve strength, balance and function
  • Reduce risk of falls
  • Help control weight
  • Help alleviate depression and anxiety
  • Improve self esteem
  • Promote relaxation
Researchers have found that at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days of the week can have positive benefits to mental health including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. In some cases this can lead to a reduction in antidepressant medication. (This should only be done in conjunction with advice from your doctor). Physiotherapists can advise on safe exercise programs.
