APA Sports Physiotherapists require successful completion of APA Sports Physiotherapist Application Process before APA membership can be approved.

APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists Specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all muscle and joint problems, especially back and neck pain. With advanced qualifications, specialised knowledge and clinical experience, APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists employ a wide range of therapies to reduce pain, restore proper movement and prevent further problems. Treatment techniques may include mobilisation, manipulative physiotherapy, stabilisation exercises, general exercises, postural/ergonomic advice and massage.

Acupuncture is a Chinese method of relieving pain with the placement of needles in specific points of the body.

Alexander technique is a method of postural control to relieve certain muscular conditions.

Amputee is a person who has had a limb or part of a limb removed.

Aquatic Physiotherapy is a program of gentle water-based exercise in a hydrotherapy pool. It aides mobility, relieves pain and strengthens muscles for a variety of musculoskeletal, developmental and neurological conditions.

Cardiology is the branch of medicine that is concerned with the heart and its circulation of blood through the arteries and veins.

Casting is a technique that is used to stop a joint of a limb from moving. It provides stabilisation and tries to prevent loss of joint range of movement caused by abnormal shortening of muscles and other soft tissues for example, in cerebral palsy or after a traumatic brain injury.

Continence/Incontinence physiotherapists assess and treat bladder or bowel incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, dysfunction and urinary urgency.

Cranio/Mandibular refers to the bones of the skull and the bones of the jaw and face.

A person with a disability is one who has impairment in a part of the body to cause a significant loss of function.

Feldenkrais is a program of body self-awareness, which is used to aid self-management of painful musculoskeletal conditions.

Gerontology deals with the changes and conditions caused by the ageing process. Gerontological physiotherapists are highly skilled in the assessment and treatment of the older person.

Hand therapy is treatment of all medical and surgical problems that affect the hand and arm, such as arthritis, tendonitis, burns and other scar problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures and after-surgical procedures such as tendon repairs and joint replacements.

Lymphoedema is a condition which often follows surgery for breast cancer and is characterised by a swollen, painful arm due to impairment of the lymphatic system.

McKenzie is a method of managing back pain with the emphasis on understanding the condition, strategies to self-manage symptoms and specific back exercises to maintain postural control and co-ordination.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all muscle and joint problems, especially back and neck pain. Physiotherapists who have advanced qualifications in this area are known as APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists (see above) and may be located by selecting the treatment area APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists within the Find-A-Physio search window. Neurological physiotherapists help restore, promote and maintain the optimal physical functioning of people after acute events such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or with progressive diseases like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.

Occupational Health physiotherapists have special expertise in ergonomics, occupational rehabilitation and prevention and treatment of work related injuries.

Orthopaedic refers to the specialty of bones and joints.

Paediatric physiotherapists work with children to ensure optimal physical function and development in movement, co-ordination, posture and the cardio-respiratory system.

Pilates is a system of exercises employing the use of specialised equipment to re-educate and rehabilitate people with chronic back problems.

Pre/Post Natal physiotherapy is a program of education, exercise and strategies during pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate period after birth.

Sports physiotherapy provides diagnosis, management, prevention and treatment of sporting injuries to athletes and any person participating in physical activity.

Stress Management is a program aimed at relieving stress and its related illnesses with education, relaxation techniques, and monitoring of self-management techniques.

Women's health targets conditions which predominately affect women, e.g. menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, stress incontinence and menopause.
